Museum.exe is a virtual museum about games that have contributed to the field of game design without relying on combat, competition and violence. Games that changed the field of video games, and will be forever looked upon by generations of both players and designers alike.
This interactive museum brings its own challenges, puzzles and secrets for you to explore, in a first-person puzzler format. In it's five exhibitions, you'll get to learn about 25 games that you should probably know about, in a way you probably have not experienced before.
You can not die or win this game and at no point will you be forced to exit the museum. For your optimal experience, treat it as you would a typical museum visit.

NOTICE
Museum.exe is a non-monetized research game developed for Uppsala University's Game Design bachelor course and is made available for educational purposes. The goal of this project is to explore how games can be used to uniquely facilitate the exhibition of games, as preservation of digital artifacts becomes all the more relevant in our society. The virtual museum includes game names, company names, logos, in-game screenshot and video trailers that belong to their respective copyright owners. We make no claim of ownership or association with any of those titles, their parent companies or any of their developers. Promotional material is included in the exhibition in a transformatively way to showcase each game's world, feel and atmosphere and can be found as part of each respective exhibit with clear labels of which game they belong to.

It was recommended in the last Fullbright newsletter and I'm so glad I played (visited?) it. I played almost all of the games in the museum and they all meant so much to me. So I'm glad others can appreciate them, too. The only thing that surprised me is that Gone Home and Firewatch were listed in the "0451" section? Or maybe I'm not getting what that genre actually is :D
Came here per a recommendation from Steve Gaynor's latest Fullbright newsletter and I have to say: thank you so much for this incredible experience.
It was thrilling to revisit memories of the classics like Gone Home and Firewatch by interacting with the games in their own little recreated worlds, and I now have multiple Steam tabs open for games I intend to buy (thanks for the recommendations!!!)
I especially loved the secrets (which vindicated my habit of typing [0451] into every keypad I see), which really showed this was more than just education, it was a labour of love.
Despite the understandable fears for the future of the industry, you leave me feeling optimistic that games as an art form will forever have a place in this community. Here's to the many more decades to come.
Amazing project. A great introduction to many great games, and a beautiful hommage to them. I also think that protecting the video game's conservation is important, just like any other art form. Excellent work !
Wow! It was a very wonderful museum! It was great to read the descriptions of some of the games I have played and some I have never played!
I had played a game like "16. Gone Home" before and was impressed by the fact that I could experience in 3D a world that was like a personal novel in which I had candidly described my own experiences.
I tried my best to solve the passcode puzzle, but I couldn't do it.
But it was a very nice work, nya~!
Thank you for playing and we are glad you enjoyed it! Yes, this was part of our research on which we find out that the best way you should showcase games is to actually to be able to play a piece from them. Not as stationary exhibits.
And don't worry about the pass codes. The major feel of the museum can be experienced w/o them too! They are for the fans of hidden referrences and easter eggs!

Good stuff! Just finished it and must say I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Really liked the mix of learning about games and playing a game at the same time. The puzzles were challenging but not impossible. The choice of games was excellent and the each of the more polished spaces felt close to the games they represented. At the beginning I thought there was too much text but I was happy it was there to read about the games I didn't know.
The performance was good on my machine but could definitely be improved considering the size of the game.
This is what museums in real life should be like!
My Mac was reaching the temperature of the sun within a few minutes...but I quite liked it aside from that.
